Alameda International High School’s baseball team secured an 18-17 victory over Bennett in an eight-inning game on April 6, with senior Edwin Arroyo scoring the winning run after a sacrifice fly by sophomore Vinny Arguello. The Pirates’ win came after nearly three hours of play and moved them to the top of the Class 3A/2A Frontier League standings.
The close contest was significant for both teams, as it determined leadership in the conference and tested their resilience. Alameda overcame a major setback when Bennett scored ten runs in the third inning to take an early lead. “I felt like I had to get there (home) to help everyone out,” Arroyo said about his game-winning run.
Senior Kato Garcia played a key role for Alameda by pitching four innings and limiting Bennett’s offense after entering during a difficult third inning. “I just wanted to pitch strikes and keep it low in the zone,” Garcia said, explaining his approach on the mound. Coach Nick Arguello praised Garcia’s performance: “I’m very fortunate to have a pitcher like Kato. He can change the game, change pace and change speed.” Despite committing nine errors, Alameda continued fighting back throughout the game.
Bennett regained control with four runs at the top of the eighth inning but could not hold off Alameda’s comeback. Contributions from lower-order hitters helped tie and eventually win the game for Alameda. Coach Arguello commented on his team’s determination: “They just have no quit… They will endure mistake, after mistake after mistake and they will just keep going.” Both teams struggled defensively; however, timely hitting proved decisive.
Last season, Alameda won its first conference title since 2002 and finished with a record of 19-4 before losing in regional playoffs. Arroyo reflected on their progress: “It’s pretty big… We’ve built something here.” Looking ahead, Coach Arguello said about repeating as league champions: “I know we have to [be] the team to do it… You have to go out and play. Give it everything that you’ve got.” The Pirates are set for six consecutive road games starting Thursday.
