Battle Mountain High School sophomore Eden DeMino won the girls slalom at the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Alpine State Championships on Friday. Her victory adds to her family’s achievements, as her sister Ruth DeMino previously earned a giant slalom title.
Eden DeMino recorded the fastest times in both runs, finishing with a combined time of 1:17.76. She finished more than two seconds ahead of Summit High School sophomore Lauren Leffel, who placed second with a time of 1:19.92. Summit freshman Kaia Riter took third place with 1:22.34.
Ruth DeMino, now a senior, finished fifth this year with a total time of 1:22.57, just behind Battle Mountain freshman Mia Eaton, who finished fourth at 1:22.48.
Other athletes in the top ten included Marloes Adriaanse from Middle Park (sixth), Lucille Dietrich from Steamboat Springs (seventh), Caroline Brownson from Summit (eighth), Ava Somers from Aspen (ninth), and Rocksy Kroeger from Aspen (tenth).
Summit High School secured its 23rd state skiing championship and its first since Alpine and Nordic events were separated into different championships last year. The team had strong performances throughout the competition, including earning the top four spots in Wednesday’s giant slalom event.
In final team standings for Alpine skiing, Summit finished first with 347 points. Battle Mountain was second for the second consecutive year with 316 points after competing closely with other schools. Aspen took third place with 313 points, followed by Middle Park at 311 and Steamboat Springs at 299.
The Nordic State Championships are scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday at Snow Mountain Ranch near Granby.
