CHSAA ice hockey state championships advance after major upset in quarterfinals

The quarterfinal round of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Ice Hockey State Championships began with five out of eight scheduled games played across two classifications.

In Class 4A, the most notable result was No. 8 Colorado Springs District 11 defeating top-seeded Battle Mountain with a score of 3-1. No. 2 Colorado Academy secured a decisive 6-0 win against No. 10 Liberty, and No. 3 Pine Creek narrowly beat No. 6 Standley Lake, finishing 1-0. The last quarterfinal matchup for this bracket is set for Wednesday when No. 4 Steamboat Springs will face No. 5 Cheyenne Mountain.

For Class 5A, No. 1 Poudre School District advanced after winning over No. 9 Chaparral, also by a score of 3-1. Two additional quarterfinal games are scheduled for Wednesday at the South Suburban Sports Complex: No. 3 Cherry Creek versus No. 6 Mountain Vista at 5:10 p.m., followed by No. 4 Regis Jesuit against No. 5 Denver East at 7:40 p.m.

Winners from each bracket will move on to the semifinals, which are set to take place Saturday at Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs.

The semifinal schedule is as follows:
– In Class 4A, Game One features Colorado Springs District 11 against the winner of Steamboat Springs and Cheyenne Mountain at 11:30 a.m., while Game Two pits Colorado Academy against Pine Creek at 2 p.m.
– In Class 5A, Game One sees Poudre School District play either Regis Jesuit or Denver East at 4:30 p.m., and Game Two has Valor Christian facing off with the winner between Cherry Creek and Mountain Vista at 7 p.m.

Tickets for both remaining quarterfinals and semifinals can be purchased in advance.

First round results included Liberty defeating Summit and Colorado Springs District overcoming Crested Butte in Class 4A; while in Class 5A, Denver East bested Castle View, Mountain Vista won over Lewis-Palmer, Monarch triumphed against Heritage, and Chaparral edged past Ralston Valley.
