Girls basketball state championship opens with few upsets in first round

The first round of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Girls Basketball State Championship has concluded for both the 5A and 6A classifications. Of the 16 games played in each classification, only three resulted in upsets.

In the 6A bracket, No. 35 Chatfield secured a notable win over No. 30 Castle View with a score of 43-28. Additionally, No. 34 Fossil Ridge advanced after defeating No. 31 Mountain Vista, 41-38.

For the 5A division, No. 33 Cheyenne Mountain narrowly defeated No. 32 Eagle Valley, finishing at 50-40.

All second-round games are scheduled for Saturday, February 28, and will be held at the home sites of the higher-seeded teams. The winners from these matchups will move on to the Sweet 16, which takes place at home sites on Wednesday, March 4. The Great 8 round is set for Friday, March 6 at the Denver Coliseum for Class 6A and Saturday, March 7 for Class 5A. Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, March 12, followed by championship games on Saturday, March 14.

The results from Wednesday’s first-round games in both brackets show most higher seeds advancing as expected.

In the upcoming second round for Class 6A:
– Top-seeded Cherokee Trail will face Boulder.
– Other notable pairings include Columbine vs. ThunderRidge and Valor Christian vs. Chatfield.

For Class 5A:
– Lutheran faces Cheyenne Mountain.
– Standley Lake meets Glenwood Springs.
– Montrose plays Longmont among other matchups.

Teams continue to compete for a spot in later rounds leading up to finals at the Denver Coliseum.
