Grandview High School’s boys basketball team achieved a significant upset on Tuesday night, defeating fourth-seeded Arvada West 62-58 in the Class 6A Sweet 16. The game took place at Arvada West High School and saw Grandview, seeded No. 13, come from behind in the final minutes.
Senior Noah Sevy was instrumental in the Wolves’ victory, scoring seven points in the last minute of play. “Sevy scored on a driving layup with just under a minute to play to cut A-West’s lead to 58-57. After a missed shot by A-West, the Wolves broke out in transition. Sevy put in a breakaway layup and was fouled with 39.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The senior converted the 3-point play to give the Wolves a 60-58 lead.”
With Grandview trailing for most of the contest—including being down by six points with less than three minutes remaining—the team closed out with an 11-1 run against Arvada West (22-3). “Another empty possession by A-West ended with Sevy with the ball again and he was fouled with 11 seconds remaining. He converted both free throws to push the lead to 62-58, the Wolves largest lead of the game.”
Arvada West’s season concluded after missing their final attempts, including a three-pointer from senior Noah Meurer, who led all scorers with 22 points. Sevy finished as Grandview’s top scorer with 19 points, supported by junior Obi Morris (14 points) and senior Omar Atieh (10 points).
Meurer made five three-pointers in the first quarter alone and is set to play football at University of Northern Colorado next year. Senior Keegen Balistreri contributed 16 points for Arvada West and will continue his football career at CSU-Pueblo. Junior Cooper Vais added another 15 points for Arvada West.
The win sends Grandview (18-7) into the state quarterfinals where they will face fifth-seeded Rock Canyon on Friday at Denver Coliseum.
Arvada West reached more than twenty wins this season for the first time in over twenty years.
