The quarterfinals of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 5A Boys Basketball State Championship concluded Saturday at the Denver Coliseum, with four teams moving on to the semifinals scheduled for Thursday.
The day was marked by upsets, as all of the top three seeds were eliminated from the tournament. In the first game, Connor Bonsett led No. 13 Silver Creek with 15 points, while teammates Blake Gorr and Luke Schmeeckle each contributed 14 points in a 62-55 victory over No. 12 Mesa Ridge. Defending state champion and No. 11 seed Windsor defeated No. 3 Severance 63-51, led by Madden Smiley’s performance of 19 points and nine rebounds.
No. 8 Lewis-Palmer continued the trend of upsets by defeating top-seeded Palisade 63-51, with Jonas Miller scoring 17 points and Devin Vandermeer adding 16. In the final quarterfinal matchup, No. 10 Lutheran maintained a lead established midway through the first half to secure a spot in the semifinals with a 61-54 win over No. 2 Grand Junction.
The semifinal games will take place on Thursday, March 12 at the Denver Coliseum: No. 8 Lewis-Palmer will face No. 13 Silver Creek at 12:45 p.m., followed by No. 10 Lutheran against No. 11 Windsor at 4 p.m.
The championship game is set for Saturday, March 14.
