Western Colorado University recently issued the following announcement.
In 2023, the Mountaineer Bowl will see a large renovation thanks to a generous donation from Paul (’78) and Katy Rady. Following the completion of the Paul M. Rady School of Computer Science and Engineering, this addition will bring Western Colorado University’s outdoor athletics facilities into the future. According to Interim President Nancy Chisholm,
“The Mountaineer Bowl is a highly visible pillar of our campus and, in its current condition, does not represent the level of excellence we aim to achieve. We hope to inspire our alumni, community, students and their families when they attend events at the complex. Now, with Paul and Katy’s generosity, we will have a facility that matches the one of a kind, majestic views from Mountaineer Bowl. Our student-athletes excel academically, retain and graduate at very high levels, and are leaders on campus. A renovated complex helps us recognize the critical role they play at our institution.”
The Specs
With the renovation, Western students gain new boxes for scorekeepers and coaches, as well as broadcast booths, filming platforms, hospitality suites, updated restrooms, and a refreshed concession area. The complex entrance will have a new ticket office, locker rooms, and training facilities. On top of that, a new video scoreboard, resurfaced track, and turf playing surface will take the Mountaineer Bowl to the next level.
The Donation
All together, the project will cost approximately $15 million, funded by Paul and Katy Rady, and $1 million fundraised prior to their donation. To honor the game-changing gift to the university, areas within the new Western complex will get new names.
The Impact
Updating the Mountaineer Bowl has been a goal within the Western community for years. With the renovated facilities, athletes will not only have great resources to train, but sports spectators will have a better space to attend events and cheer them on.
