WASHINGTON — On April 18, Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), former Army Ranger, issued this statement following the Department of Defense announcing Michael McNerney as the first Director of the Civilian Protection Center of Excellence.
Congressman Crow’s legislation codified the creation of Secretary Austin’s Civilian Protection Center of Excellence last Congress to increase transparency and accountability of civilian harm caused by US military operations. Last Congress, Crow passed major portions of his Protection of Civilians in Military Operations Act and Department of Defense Civilian Harm Transparency Act through the FY23 NDAA and also joined Reps. Jacobs, Khanna, Kim, and Malinowski to launch the Protection of Civilians in Conflict Caucus.
In a statement, Congressman Crow said:
“Protecting civilians in conflict is a moral obligation and national security imperative. Following our work last Congress to increase transparency and prevention of civilian harm, I’m pleased to see the Civilian Protection Center of Excellence announce their first Director and continue the work we’ve begun. Through Director McNerney’s work, the US can continue to stand as an example to our allies for the proper treatment, transparency, and care of civilians in conflict areas.”
