The Colorado College men’s lacrosse program will be well represented at the 2022 World Lacrosse Men’s Under-21 World Championship starting Wednesday, Aug. 10, in Limerick, Ireland.
Head coach Mike Horowitz will serve as an assistant coach for the Israeli team, while rising sophomore Kevin Somerville is a member of the host team, Ireland, and incoming freshman Luke Smith will play of the South Korean squad.
“The opportunity to grow the sport at the U-21 level is extremely rewarding,” Horowitz said. “To help a team comprised of mostly native Israelis showcase the hard work they put in everyday is one of the most enjoyable experiences of my coaching career.
“Kevin made tremendous strides on the field in his first year at CC and Luke is a dynamic and agile offensive player who I’m sure will be critical to the success of the Korean team in Ireland. This opportunity will no doubt help both of them tremendously heading into fall ball.”
A record 23 teams will compete in the 10-day event at the University of Limerick and it will be the largest ever age group World Championship staged by World Lacrosse.
Originally a U-19 World Championship, the World Lacrosse membership in 2020 approved a change in the upper age of eligibility, raising the event to U20. Due to postponement brought about by the global pandemic, the upper age of eligibility for the men’s age group World Championship is being raised on a one-time basis to U21 for 2022.
