City of Aurora issued the following announcement on July 17.
On July 16, Gov. Jared Polis issued an executive order that requires everyone in Colorado over the age of 10 to wear a facial covering while in public indoor spaces. The order is effective at midnight July 16 and will remain in effect for at least 30 days.
I have advocated for this statewide approach since before Tri-County Health Department issued its own facial covering mandate a week ago, and I was honored to join Gov. Polis and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock during the governor’s announcement to support this collective effort to stem the spread of this pandemic. With the recent rise in cases and hospitalizations, the wearing of facial coverings is the least invasive way for us to reopen our economy and our schools. The virus knows no boundaries, and we must work together to ensure that our businesses stay in business and our kids can learn in the classroom.
Draft Resolution on Independent Investigation into Elijah McClain Moving on to Full Council Discussion
On Thursday, the City Council’s Public Safety, Courts and Civil Service Policy Committee (Council Member Allison Hiltz, chair, Council Member Curtis Gardner and Council Member Angela Lawson) moved forward a draft resolution about an independent investigation into the Elijah McClain case. It will now go before the full council for discussion at their July 20 meeting.
The resolution calls for an independent team of at least three consultants with expertise in independent critical incident investigations, law enforcement and public safety accountability, civil rights, police and EMT training and procedures, use of force, and/or criminal justice. It’s being proposed that the team will be led by Jonathan Smith of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs in Washington D.C.
I look forward to the council’s discussion on Monday and the quick start of the investigation in order to come to the answers that our community needs. It’s important to note that no city official or employee will have control of the substance of the investigation or final report, and that we will be working with the state attorney general’s office and the Department of Justice to make sure this investigation does not interfere with any other previously announced reviews of this case.

Take the Reimagine RTD Survey by July 24
RTD is leading a two-year effort to evaluate how and where the agency provides service to better connect people to the places they want to go. The effort, titled "Reimagine RTD," is seeking feedback from the public through July 24 to determine what future services RTD should provide given its limited resources as the region moves past the effects of the pandemic. If you value transit in our city and the region, please take a few minutes to take the survey.

Join the Global Fest Virtual Parade of Nations
Global Fest, the city of Aurora's annual celebration of cultures and traditions, is going virtual for 2020. Instead of the usual Parade of Nations at which Aurorans cross the event stage carrying the flag of a nation that is part of their heritage, this year we're inviting our residents to send in photos of themselves or their families holding a flag. It can be a cloth flag, a flag printed on paper, even a digital image of a flag on a phone or tablet. Just snap a photo and submit it by Aug. 3 at AuroraGov.org/GlobalFestPhotos, and then watch the event on Facebook Live or AuroraTV at 11 a.m. Aug. 15 and see if your photo made it.
