CITY OF AURORA: A Message from Mayor Coffman - July 24, 2020

04da3785 c415 4e2e 81c0 85295006f30b

City of Aurora issued the following announcement on July 24.

Aurora Public Library Begins Reopening Branches

Aurora Public Library is excited to announce the reopening of all six locations

  • As of July 22, Aurora Central, Tallyn’s Reach and Hoffman libraries have opened.
  • Beginning July 27, Mission Viejo, Iliff Square and Martin Luther King Jr. libraries will reopen to the public.
  • All locations will be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • To ensure the health and safety of our visitors, we ask you to visit the library’s website to learn about all safety procedures in place, including our mask policy and capacity guidelines.
Update on Face Covering Order and Aurora’s Disaster Declaration

On Monday, City Council unanimously approved a resolution to renew the city manager’s disaster declaration. This enables the city to delegate enforcement authority of public health and executive orders related to facial coverings to other city departments aside from the Aurora Police Department. The disaster declaration also allows the city to quickly implement necessary policies to address regulatory changes, directives or licensing restrictions contained in the executive orders or public health orders.

The city of Aurora joins area jurisdictions in support of the recent executive order from Gov. Jared Polis and public health order from Tri-County Health Department that require people ages 11 and older to wear a covering over their noses and mouths in public indoor spaces and in other situations, depending on the order. A majority of the City Council agreed not to pursue any action to opt out of the Tri-County order, which is longer in duration and contains additional requirements related to face coverings while outdoors.

I believe face covering is the least invasive way to help slow the spread of this virus and ensure that we can continue to keep our businesses open and get kids back in the classroom where they belong. It’s going to take all of us to make this work, and we are confident that our residents and businesses will step up to meet this challenge.

Resolution Approved to Open Independent Investigation into the Elijah McClain Case

City Council unanimously approved a resolution July 20 to open an independent investigation into the Elijah McClain case. The city is working on completing a contract with the lead consultant, Jonathan Smith, who is executive director of the Washington Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Prior to his government services, Smith was the executive director of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, the Public Justice Center in Baltimore and the D.C. Prisoners' Legal Services Project.

Additional use of force and medical experts have been identified to round out the review panel, and recommendations will be reviewed by and voted on by the City Council soon. This process also will connect Smith with the State Attorney General to help finalize the scope of Smith's work for Aurora and ensure the Aurora independent investigation is complementary to and not duplicative of the Attorney General's work. The city's independent investigation will include a thorough review of any policies and procedures that touch on the Elijah McClain case, and it also will include recommendations for moving forward.

Mobile Food Pantry Continues – New Day and Location for August, Volunteers Needed

The Aurora Mobile Food Pantry, in partnership with Aurora Interfaith Community Services, continues to serve our community each week. Last week, the pantry served more than 36,000 meals! The mobile pantry will be held July 30 at 10 a.m. at Overland High School, 12400 E. Jewell Ave., ending when food runs out. The Aurora Animal Shelter will continue to provide pet food to residents as part of the Mobile Food Pantry.

In August, the pantry will move to Wednesdays at the Town Center at Aurora, 14200 E. Alameda Ave. The food pantry utilizes about 50 volunteers each week, and we are still seeking community volunteers for the August dates.

Mayor Mike Live – 3 p.m. Fridays on Facebook and AuroraTV.org

Join me on Facebook Live or AuroraTV.org at 3 p.m. Fridays for updates on the city’s COVID-19 response, as well as information on various topics affecting our city. This week (July 24) on the show will be Council Member Françoise Bergan to provide updates on Ward VI, including plans for the newest recreation center in Aurora. I will also be joined by Council Member Allison Hiltz for an update on the independent investigation into the Elijah McClain case, as well as Trevor Vaughn from the city of Aurora’s Tax and Licensing Division to learn more about how the city is supporting businesses and the mask mandate at this time.

Join the Global Fest Virtual Parade of Nations

Global Fest, the city of Aurora's annual celebration of cultures and traditions, is going virtual for 2020. Instead of the usual Parade of Nations at which Aurorans cross the event stage carrying the flag of a nation that is part of their heritage, this year we're inviting our residents to send in photos of themselves or their families holding a flag. It can be a cloth flag, a flag printed on paper, even a digital image of a flag on a phone or tablet. Just snap a photo and submit it by Aug. 3 at AuroraGov.org/GlobalFestPhotos, and then watch the event on Facebook Live or AuroraTV at 11 a.m. Aug. 15 to see if your photo made it.
