Arapahoe County issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.
Arapahoe County’s Mule Gulch Open Space, located six miles southwest of Byers on the Eastern Plains of Colorado, is one of the County’s largest -- and newest -- properties. It was acquired in 2017 as part of a large-scale effort around conservation of the native prairies of the Eastern Plains, and like all Arapahoe County Open Space properties, is supported by the voter-approved quarter cent Arapahoe County Open Space Sales and Use Tax.
Approximately two-thirds of the property is devoted to agricultural use, primarily winter wheat production. It is a mutually beneficial relationship between the County and local agriculture producers; it means being good stewards and, at the same time, there are environmental benefits from crop production, including improved soil quality and decreased erosion.
