WASHINGTON — On May 9, 2023, Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), co-founder of the House ALS Caucus, joined Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Terri Sewell (D-AL), and Ken Calvert (R-CA) to reintroduce a House Resolution designating May as ALS Awareness Month to bring attention to the thousands who suffer from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and renew efforts to find a cure.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the body's motor neurons causing decreased mobility and eventually leads to death.
“ALS is a horrible disease that affects thousands across the country, with veterans twice as likely to be diagnosed,” said Congressman Jason Crow. “That’s why I joined my colleagues in reintroducing a House Resolution designating May as ALS Awareness Month. Families shouldn’t have to suffer through this disease alone. Together we’ll find a cure.”
“At least 30,000 Americans are battling ALS and it is critical that we work together to find a cure to this debilitating disease,” said Congressman Fitzpatrick. “I’m proud to support this bipartisan resolution to honor those Americans battling ALS and fighting for access to treatment.”
“I’m proud to join my colleagues in leading this resolution to designate the month of May 2023 as ALS Awareness Month,” said Congresswoman Sewell. “ALS impacts thousands of Americans each year, and it is my hope that this resolution will bring attention to their lives and stories. I know that with the continued efforts of scientists, policymakers, and advocates, we will continue to discover better treatments and eventually a cure for this terrible disease.”
“ALS Awareness Month is an opportunity to stand in support of individuals and families battling this terrible disease and shed light on the tireless efforts to develop treatments and a cure,” said Congressman Calvert. “As a Co-Chair of the ALS Caucus, I will continue to advocate for those with ALS as well as robust resources for research into treatments and cures.”
Crow helped form the bipartisan ALS caucus in 2019 to bring together lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to share experiences, exchange ideas, and work collaboratively to find a cure. The ALS Caucus seeks to raise awareness about the challenges faced by ALS patients and their families, think creatively about policy solutions to reduce the negative impacts of ALS, and invest in groundbreaking research to end ALS.
