WASHINGTON — On May 11, 2023, Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06) released this statement following House passage of H.R. 2, the “Child Deportation Act,” which would enact strict anti-immigrant measures, including ending America’s decades old asylum system and creating more bottlenecks at ports of entry, permanently and indefinitely detaining asylum seekers, criminalizing non-profits and faith organizations trying to help asylum seekers, and providing no additional resources for Customs and Border Patrol officers at ports of entry.
In a statement, Congressman Crow said:
“America’s immigration system is broken. Thousands are seeking refuge, but our border patrol agents don’t have the resources to meet the demand or the infrastructure to process cases as people arrive.
“We need comprehensive immigration reform, and H.R. 2 isn’t it. The “Child Deportation Act” would end America’s decades old asylum system, criminalize non-profits and faith organizations from helping asylum seekers, and limit funding to border patrol agents making it harder, not easier for them to do their jobs.
“We are all human beings. We should all be treated with compassion, dignity, and respect. It’s long past time for serious bipartisan discussions to fix our immigration system. These discussions must be focused on human rights and dignity, expanding legal pathways, and enforcing border security.”
